Well... again I'll tell you that the better way to do it via JS...

Anyway, there's a method that you can use. But... nothing is so pretty as we expect; it works only in IE. It's called: expression( JS code );

You use it inside your CSS definition, check out:
<script>var myWidth = 200;</script>
<style>
  .mySpan { width: expression(myWidth); border: 1px solid black; }
</style>

<span class="mySpan">Test</span>

This will work perfectly in IE, but not in Moz and Opera.
