"In this example I am using an existing attribute of a html-element. But I want to use it in a property of another html-element - the link element (<link rel="stylesheet alternate" ). "

That is bound to lead to trouble. You can disable stylesheets using DOM2:

http://www.w3.org/TR/DOM-Level-2-Style/stylesheets.html#StyleSheets-StyleSheet

You should also be able to use getAttribute("disabled") on the LINK element even if the LINK element has no such attribute in valid HTML/XHTML.
