That's because I think a tree is a fast way to explore a structure except if you have to refresh a view area each time a node is collapsed or expanded.

Perhaps I'm not clear... in fact, that's the way the MSDN Library tree works (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library), if you forget what I requested about keyboard (which is not a good idea, I agree :-).

This would definately require changes to the code because the tree. I doubt it is easy to do this.

Why do you need this? It does not sound like a good UI.
